The creation of the restaurant “La Traviata” was inspired by the vision of its founder, Zef Shilaku. At age 17, Zef fled Albania in 1948 and went to Vienna, Austria. This is where he first experienced a life-changing performance of Verdi’s opera “La Traviata”. This opera had a profound effect on Zef instilling a passion for the opera art form that was to last his entire life.

While living in San Francisco in 1973, Zef had a fateful reunion with an old friend, chef Gaetano Ramacet, who proposed a new restaurant venture which led to the birth of the “La Traviata” we know today.

Over the years La Traviata has offered authentic Italian cuisine and operatic music to generations of locals. La Traviata also acted as a stage for Zef’s opera passion by hosting many world famous operatic celebrities such as Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Luciano Pavarotti, Beverly Sills, Renata Scotto, and Carol Van Ness to name a few; plus countless others at after hours private, opera cast parties that allowed Zef to express his passion for the opera art form that he loved so much.

Zef’s nephew Gjon "John" Gjoni and wife Silvie, worked with Zef for many years at La Traviata, taking over management of the restaurant when Zef passed away.
